PATHWAYS TO PEACE
September 7, 2017


Come to the Austin Chapter of the United Nations Association's  Inaugural Pathways to Peace Reception in honor of Peace Week.  Dr. Michael R. Andersen, Senior Lecturer and Director of International Relations and Global Studies at  UT Austin will speak on the US in UNESCO — Why  it Matters.

In honor of celebrating the significance of peace & harmony, we also encourage you to support Ten Thousand Villages, our venue partner, in their mission to create

PEACE RISING: WORLD PEACE & GLOBAL UNITY STREAMING FILM SERIES

September 9 - September 24, 2017  

Films for the Planet is delighted to be hosting a free global stream of Greg Reitman's award-winning documentary ROOTED in PEACE on International Day of Peace, September 21. We want to share this unique opportunity with individuals and organizations who might be interested in participating in and sharing this exciting event. The stream is also taking place during the films theatrical release with Landmark Theaters in over 50 U.S. cities on the same day.

DIPLOMACY BEGINS HERE SUMMIT
September 19, 2017

GlobalAustin, in partnership with the San Antonio Council for International Visitors, the Dallas World Affairs Council, the El Paso Council for International Visitors, Global North Texas and Global South Texas is proud to announce the first ever "Diplomacy Begins Here" summit, to be held on Tuesday, September 19th in the Texas State Capitol building.  

Joaquin Castro, United States House of Representative for Texas's 20th congressionaldistrict, will  open the summit which will focus on the vital need to improve international dialogue starting at the local level, the role of individual citizens in creating a positive US image in the world, and the impact of US foreign policy on local communities.

 

On Tuesday, September 19, an all day summit will be held featuring expert speakers on current US foreign policy priorities and panel discussions on international trade, international journalism, the growing role of sports in creating international goodwill, the effect of global events on international businesses, contributions of immigrants to innovation, economic development, and cultural diversity, as well as sessions designed especially for students.

The day will conclude with a Musical Diplomacy celebration at Scholtz Garten, featuring talented local artists, such as acclaimed singer and cultural ambassador, Gina Chavez, and retired US ambassador and current Austin musician, Greg Engle.     As seating is limited, we encourage early registration.

CLASSICAL MUSIC FOR THE WORLD CHAMBER CONCERT

September 19, 2017, 12 - 1 PM at Texas State Capitol Rotunda

The CMSW Chamber Ensemble will  perform at the Texas State Capitol's Main Floor Rotunda as a community Partner for the  Diplomacy Begins Here summit event,“Texas Two-Stepping to a Better World: A Celebration of Citizen Diplomacy”.  CMFW Young Music Ambassadors and adult musicians will play together under the instruction of Dr. Eugene Gratovich, the Associate Concert Master of Austin Symphony Orchestra and a former professor in UT, Austin. SAINT JOHN'S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OFFERS TWO OPPORTUNITIES TO OBSERVE THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE
 
Evening Candlelight Vigil, 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 20, 2017 
The candlelight vigil will be held on the front lawn of St. John's UMC, under the stars and oak trees. This will be a time for song, silence, and candle light.

International Moment of Silence, noon, Thursday Se;ptember 21
The  moment of silence will be observed on the front lawn of the St. John's UMC right at noon. Following that, there will be the opportunity to visit prayer stations inside the church and walk the labyrinth in the Chapel.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE CELEBRATION AND DOVE RELEASE

September 21, 2017, 10 AM, Austin City Hall Plaza

Peace Day Austin will once again hold our annual press conference at Austin City Hall Plaza  to celebrate the International Day of Peace on Thursday, September 21st at 10am. Witness and hear the reading of The City of Austin's Official Mayoral Peace Day Proclamation declaring Sept 21, 2017 Peace Day in Austin, Texas.

Also scheduled to give remarks are Assistant Chief Ely Reyes from Austin Police Department and Major Andy Kelly who is the Austin Area Commander of the Salvation Army in Ausitn. The event will be hosted by KMFA 89.5 Radio Host, Diane Donovan and will culminate in the annual releasing of Peace Doves at Austin City Hall. The event is free and open to all who wish to participate.

AUSTIN'S DISPUTE RESOLUTION CENTER WORKS AT CREATING PEACE ALL YEAR LONG

From Peace Day to Peace Day Annually  

Austin's Dispute Resolution Center is an independent, nonprofit organization that provides and promotes accessible, high-quality dispute resolution services for all people in Travis County and the surrounding Austin, TX areas.  In addition, the DRC offers  Mediation Services, Mediation Training, Customized Mediation Training, Facilitation Services and Community Education Programs designed to give individuals, businesses and communities the skills necessary to effectively mediate and resolve conflicts.
